How to complete the assignment

Each technique/approach has a page that has been started for you. You should fill this out with additional resources (with a heavy weighting of peer-reviewed, high quality scholarly sources, taking care to cite all the most relevant sources) and a well-written essay summarising the approach, including specific examples. Music notation or audio links as illustration are highly encouraged.

Your task is to:

1. locate the highest quality, most relevant sources
2. critically read the sources, assessing their contents
3. summarise the key points in each source
4. synthesise the knowledge gained from your reading
5. communicate this knowledge in a carefully written overall summary
6. illustrate the knowledge with performances and recordings of musical examples

To find scholarly sources, you should consult at least the following (trying many search terms relevant to your topic):

• Grove Music online - use this as a starting point and check the references
• The Music Index
• Wikipedia - another one for a starting point - some good references at times, and useful for very recent music
• ProQuest database
• Academic Search Elite
• JSTOR
• Music Australia - use to find a wide range of sound, articles and scores online.
• RILM Abstracts

There's also the various library catalogues. Don't forget about UQ

You should focus on music created in the last 50 years or so - earlier than that is difficult to consider contemporary art music.

To insert a link, use square brackets "[" and "]" to enclose the URI ("http://" etc), and leave a space between the URI and the display information.

To make a heading, put a "!" before the text. Use "!!" for Heading 2 etc.
